Remember?

Do you remember when the word no had meaning?

Unlike babies learning to say it for the first time and we laughed because it’s their only response to anything, I remember when the word held transcendent power.

But now…

Remember all the times she said no and he didn’t listen.

Sweat glistens off his forehead as he asks for some more head and she complies… but you can see in her eyes that she’d rather be any place but here.

Yet he is the epitome of her fears.

Not loving him seems heinous, and being alone seems far more dangerous than being wrapped in his arms.

Captivated by his heart.

Kept in by his harm.

Melting like ice in his palm to the heat of his words but not his passion, because his heart stopped giving warmth.

Her body never relaxes, tense to the thought that his pleasure is all that matters.

Not her.

Somehow she enlisted in this war and never learned to fight the enemies that stood right before her, because they hid behind the claims they loved her then forced her head under the covers.

Remember he was a lover, a friend, a teacher, a coworker, a stranger, a powerseeker.

He saw her heart was gold plated, so he stole pieces of her peace to keep her.

Never giving her what she needed while his desires were always conceded.

And on nights her soul ached from giving it all away, he still took more.

Remember that she said no and he didn’t listen.

Her body his possession constantly destroyed with his limited perspective.

She loved and he was reckless.

So now she’s stuck. He’s bigger, stronger and taller and he wanted to fuck.

And while God gives blessings she’s still praying for luck,

praying he’ll give up and let go.

All the while she says no.

Begs

Screams

Cries as the little girl inside her dies.

but he doesn’t listen.

Her trust and self-worth lost in his forced submission.

While her rapist feels no remorse she feels cursed.

Dreaming of a hearse carrying her home as she carries this hurt.

Broken.

Things left unspoken.

Shame on her brain echoing the muted “nos”

Remember?

When the woman’s body was blessed by nature, not a physical play place for man’s sexual desire.

Remember?

When justice prevailed and was fair, not fear of a man’s feelings being more important than a crime being justified.

Remember?

Before they planted seeds of doubt into you, your soil was rich with love because no one came in to make you feel unworthy.

Remember?

Because she will never forget, her existence will shake and ache for days she long wished for before he took what didn’t belong to him.

Oh but was she hoein?

Had too much shoulder showing?

Was she asking for it when she said no?

When the manifestation of greed took over the need for altruistic behavior.

Remember when her body was not succulently savoured but Savior.

Woman was God and we worshipped her.

We praised her inner being, her mind was worth seeing.

Her nakedness was not an invitation for penetration or violation,

it was her liberation.
